I posted this a couple of days ago but it was in an old thread that
might not catch people's attention so here it is again. Although GG
has stopped accepting new content, it still allows searching of
content prior to 22 Feb 2024 and you can get a link to any specific
post by clicking on the 3 dots beside it.

I have also put up a short YouTube video (just under 3 mins) showing a
worked example.

Thanks. I almost never have a need or desire to dig up old
posts, but it's nice to know it's possible, at least for
now.

Most of the posts to GG have a fairly short shelf life. Ones from a few
years ago are pretty smelly.

Not sure what that means (if they're there, they're there),
but OK. It is, after all, Gurgle, with all that implies.

The "smelly" refers to the fact that in the past we had lots more trolls
than we do now. There is such a things as progress. Is our remaining
troll gone? I have it fillfiled, so I can't see it.

OK. If by our remaining troll you're referring to The Idiot
With a 4-Character Nym and an implication of (unjustified)
self-love, AFAIK he/she/it is still here. Since I also have
it killfiled (the horror!) I don't see it directly, only
when someone replies to its inanities.

There lies the problem, right? I did recently indulge in documenting its
abuse of posters here as a futile hope DIG would take notice. But aside
from that I have not provided oxygen. People vary on their own personal
policy toward blatantly abusive trolls. I say either starve them out or
document their abuses.
Actually, what you have done for years is to attack those who document
their abuses, and by so doing, provided those trolls with plenty of
oxygen.

I'm not sure what you mean by that, I've always found it highly
accurate and reliable as an *archive*.

GG was certainly plagued by spammers and trolls but that was really
just a nuisance for those who depended on it for Usenet rather than a
newsreader though there was also a knock on effect on unmoderated
groups, with many destroyed by the spam and trolling. Not really a big
problem on moderated groups like TO - thanks continue to DIG for his
good work on this.

GG was notorious for regularly breaking its search engine, an
essential feature of any archive. These bugs were well-documented and
reported on T.O. at the time they occurred. You're either joking, or
you have had little experience using GG, or you live in an alternate
universe.

I don't use it a lot but occasionally find it useful to check out what
I actually said when people are misunderstanding or misrepresenting
what I said in the past or to check things people said that they now
deny.

It's also useful for getting links usable by people who either can't
or won't use a newsreader.
