I meant to post this on the last Trans Day of Visibility, but I got
distracted and forgot about it. Then I thought I'd wait for the next
TDoV, but... you know, we're all getting older, and who knows what might
happen between now and then? Who knows whom we might lose? And I want to
be sure as many folks from t.o as possible have a chance to know me as
my real self.

So hi, folks. I'm Kestrel Clayton, formerly known as Richard Clayton.
Turns out I'm a girl! I hope you're all well.

Not gonna lie, I miss usenet. Not as clumsy or random as Twitter, but an
elegant social medium for a more civilized age.

I hope life is treating you well. I always found your posts extremely
informative.

Great that you found usenet again, even greater you found yourself!

Thanks! Never lost usenet, though; good ol' Eternal September is still
set up in my newsreader, even if I don't say much here any more.

That is a lovely quote, and I'd never read it before. Thank you!

Welcome! I remember you, and I just checked and indeed, we interacted at
least a few times on the Howlers Facebook page- but I missed your post
of July 20 :(

Congratulations on your transition, and I wish you well!

Thank you! Don't know that I have all that much to say here; the
diminishing of usenet is unfortunate, but it's a problem bigger than my
little self can fix.

Although I suppose I could share my pontifications on how internet
creationism was a prototype of what we now call the alt-right...

Since you mention it, you aren't the only T.O. alumnus who has
opinions along those lines...

Thank you for the compliment! I must say, it's kinda cool to choose
one's own name. I suspect in a few years everyone will be doing it. ;)

Thank you for this, too. So far, it's pretty amazing. Being a woman has
its complications, but it's damn sure a better fit for me than being a
man. Makes me wonder why I stuck with boymode so long.

Thank you. And yeah, it's a shame ot see usenet dying. Maybe it's just
nostalgia talking — and I don't much trust nostalgia — but it does seem
like things were genuinely better in the eras of Fido, usenet, and WWW
bulletin boards. I think most modern social media is awful: The Almighty
Algorithm™ makes discussions shallow and hyperbolic, and funnels
attention to loudmouthed dingdongs.

On the plus side, FOSS is providing some compelling alternatives to
Facebook and Twitter these days... though it remains to be seen whether
they can survive the actively hostile efforts of tech gazillionaires.

I seem to recall reading that somewhere... perhaps it was mentioned in
the Facebook group? But regardless, I was sad to hear it. I don't know
if he had a family or any particularly close friends, but I wish them
comfort.
